Benefits of running

Running can save us!

Running could be the saviour of society! Well, maybe not the saviour, but it certainly comes with a lot of benefits! More than most people realise.

Those of you that know me, know that I am a massive advocate of ‘The Daily Mile’ and any programme that gets people daily! Something that is cheap (or free!) and is a population scale initiative that benefits both mental and physical benefits… However I actually have a general affinity for running for all ages!

According to the Cooper Institute in Dallas, USA, they compared running with the longevity benefits of walking and biking plus other activities. People that run 2-4 hours a week live approximately 3.2 years longer than non-runners, cutting the risk of premature mortality by 25-40%! (Other sports were only 12%).

Now you can take this sort of research with a pinch of salt, as there are obvious pro’s and con’s to running continuously for 2-4 hours or breaking it into smaller 10-15 min intervals throughout the week. Plus if you’ve got bad running mechanics you’ll probably end up needing hours and hours of physio if you jump straight into 4 hours a week. BUT you get the picture.

Running is healthy, not just for your day to day health and for supporting weight management, but your life expectancy as well!

Live longer….RUN!
